It's human nature to want to classify things. I find it pretty annoying myself but I think that if you label the genre of a track, it gives people an idea of what they're about to listen too. It also helps DJs pick songs that fit well together for their sets without to much of a hassle.
Right, genre's are created so people can classify things, to stop people who don't like heavy metal accidentally buying a heavy metal album.
But when sub-genre's of sub genre's of sub-genre's are in place, it over steps the line of convenience and begins to become inconvenient again.
In the future (or the present for all I know), music we have listened to in the past that has defined genre's or has been known as a genre for years, will soon be labeled as a sub-genre of something.
No longer is there such a thing as a rock record, and soon all records that we have come to know as rock records in the past will be known as some other hybrid genre. It's ridiculous.
I think I shall get bits of paper that say 'ROCK', 'POP', 'HIP-HOP', 'METAL', etc and sellotape them to cd's in the shop.
