TOPIC: What host do you use for music making?

For those musicians out there, time to vote for your favorite DAW and host.

I listed as many of the well known ones as I could, but there is a limit of only 10 options per poll, and obviously there will always be a few people who use lesser known ones that aren't listed, so I included the 'Other' option.

Cubase 5, but I've got a copy of Ableton Live 8 Suite to play with, as it comes highly recommended.
I also run Spectrasonics Omnisphere, Native Instruments Komplete 6, Rob Papen Predator & Blue, ABL, ADM, Arturia Jupiter 8, Minimoog and Multimoog.
Plenty of toys to make plenty of klik klik whirly beep beeps (old record shop in Brighton, sadly missed )

A lovely thank you to Mr. W 30, James Jupiter the 8th, Mrs. 303, Mr. 909, and especially Monsieur Akai 1100 (The Earthbound Crew)

Nice nice, I use Reaper and FL, FL mainly though.
I try to keep my VST's to a minimum though, I mainly run Korg Legacy Collection for the MS-20 softsynth, Massive, Nexus, Synth1 and FL's prepacked sampler and slicer for beats and sampling.
Works a treat

What website/program would a beginner use?

I'm interested in making some music (mainly just to entertain myself more than anything else) but all I've ever used is a 303/808/909 emulator on my iPhone so far

If you're serious I would recommend getting Ableton. Loads of beginners use that and take to it pretty easy. There's worse things to spend a couple of hundred quid on.

Agreed.
When it comes down to it, all the major ones (Ableton, Cubase, Reason, Fl Studio and Reaper etc) do more or less the same things, since you're running the same VST's and effects (apart from maybe a few program exclusive ones).

Ableton seems to be one of the most popular, along with Reaper (Never used Reaper myself before, but past poll results seem to show it as the most popular next to Cubase and Ableton) so it's probably a good bet to play around with the free demo/trial version for a while, get to grips with it.

Plenty of tutorials and guides on the internet on forums and Youtube for Ableton.

Just start slow and take it step by step and be patient...what I always do when learning a new program is get bored during the very early tutorials, as I think I know what's going on, so I skip ahead a bit and then slowly get more and more lost.

Best of luck!

I'm not sure I'm serious enough to actually buy anything quite yet, this is mainly for fucking about with when I'm bored. Might give Ableton a download soon though, cheers guys.
